III EMPERORS

What happens when three brothers all with a background in fashion and design come together to start their own brand?
The most exquisite line of menswear (and women's wear) we have ever seen.

The Golkar Brothers have all studied the arts one way or another with Babak Golkar graduating with honours from the prestigious London College of Fashion, Haman studying Product Design and Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins, and Farhan at Chelsea College of Art and Design for graphic design. Combine this with their perceptive taste in style because of their cultural influences being British-Iranian and not to mention their charming personalities and dashing good looks, the brothers are a recipe for success. With their skills and knowledge, they are a force to be reckoned with and starting a fashion line was inevitable. We're sure the world of fashion has been grateful the Golkars decided to set up The Emperor 1688 in 2007, starting with menswear.

A lot of thought and effort has gone into their brand and nothing was taken lightly. From their brand name and logo to where they source their materials to their clientele, the brothers have been very hands-on with everything that goes on in the business. The fabrics they use are from Italian mills and raw silks from France. The have built up The Emperor 1688 in a way that you are guaranteed quality of the highest level whenever you purchase anything from them.

They started making their pieces with the modern man in mind. Nowadays, we are not confined to just one place, we have the privilege to travel around the world and experience different cultures. The brothers understand that and translate it into their designs. The Golkars made sure that any man wearing an Emperor 1688 coat or maybe even just the shirt would feel more confident and empowered and, come on, we all know the appeal of a man in a suit. Influenced by their upbringing in England and Iranian heritage, they make it a point to "incorporate very structured British tailoring but combine that with Iranian fabrics and specific global trends".

Babak, Haman and Farhan may have different approaches to fashion but they are able to come together to create a unique style for their brand. While there is focus on trends of the season, there is a certain aspect to their pieces that feels classic and timeless. It's not something you would discard after the season is over because it's so not in anymore but rather something you'd keep cause you know you can wear it again. Their pieces stand out in that people will definitely appreciate their quality and cut. They are made to be cherished and worn out (not that you should, having a few more coats and trousers is always handy) not just displayed and worn once.

Primarily starting out with men as their target clients in mind, The Emperor 1688 runway show an equal balance of both women's wear and menswear for Dubai Fashion Forward this year. While the Golkar brothers have dabbled in women's clothing before, this is the first time they really showcased more of their potential to branch out into a lifestyle brand. They went with the AW14 collection, aptly named 'Albert and Victoria' after the past monarch of the United Kingdom and her husband. The pieces exude quality and class reminiscent of royalty. Like the royal couple, the Golkars aren't ethnically British so this collection  "explores what it means to be British today".

A lot of tartan was used in this collection and had a lot of greens and blues, all inspired by the Scottish highlands. The wool used was woven there as well and, as usual, the whole collection portrayed quality above anything else.

Their men's line is on point but that shouldn't be a surprise.

As for the women's line, the coats are definitely something we would wear in Europe when the weather starts to drop this year. Also, since the colours lean towards a neutral scale because of the blacks and whites, it makes the pieces all the more wearable. If you did want to spice up your outfit, you can always partner it with accessories or a more colourful top. The capes are definitely something you want to add to your closet as well.

One of the focuses of The Emperor 1688 for men has been shirts since it is a wardrobe staple, so they decided to do the same for the women's line. To enhance the femininity of the line, they partnered them with shorts or skirts and topped it off with elegant coats.

Shirt dresses from mini to maxi were also present on the runway and we just love how they flowed. Their use of sheer fabrics showed that it's not all about suits and wools, they can do sexy too and we love them all the more for it.

Since it's almost summer, we get that you can't exactly wear a lot from that collection, unless you want to sweat through the wool that is. Not to worry, the The Emperor 1688 SS14 collection is just as elegant. Featuring light hues of blue and interesting patterns, these pieces are definitely something you should be wearing this summer.

To beat the heat, the Golkar brothers paired jackets with shorts. The fabrics look so breezy and fresh. They seem just about perfect for a garden party or a brunch date with your lady.

The women's line is significantly smaller compared to their AW14 collection. They have the wardrobe staple shirts but instead of using heavy fabrics for them, they used a sheer fabric. There was one pop of colour though seen in this tailored silk yellow jacket.

The Golkars aren't all about buttons and collars and they proved it with these feminine pieces. They added details like lace and beading that added class and softness to the ouffits. Also, the daisy/sunflower dress is so cute and playful!

Beautifully tailored with gorgeous fabrics, The Emperor 1688 is definitely one of the best brands out there when it comes to menswear. And now that they're getting into women's wear... Well, they're certainly one to watch in the fashion world.

Lastly, congratulations to Babak, Haman and Farhan Golkar for being nominated for the International Woolmark Prize!
